I applied at Oak Haven on a whim. I had just moved back to San Antonio from Detroit and needed a job asap. I applied for the front desk position along with a dozen other similar positions for other companies...I was called right away for an interview and got the job same day. I started at the front desk and absolutely loved it but really wanted growth in the company. I had applied for the bookkeeping position but was initially turned down since I didn't have bookkeeping experience. I decided to leave Oak Haven at that point and I started a job working for the City of San Antonio. My first day working for the city, I realized I had made a mistake and was crying driving home after my first day....contemplating if I should return to Oak Haven but a little too embarrassed to ask. As fate would have it, Dr. Shuel called me and said he wasn't having luck filling the bookkeeping position and wanted to give me a try. I was ecstatic and returned to OHM immediately. I eventually was promoted to GM in October of 2011 and have truly looked to Dr. Shuel as my mentor in business and we've grown so much! I absolutely love the culture and that we all truly and genuinely care about each other. The most difficult year of my life was 2016...I was diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually closed the year with a sad divorce and my son being diagnosed with Autism. I can credit so much of my strength in surviving that year to OHM owners and employees. I was so supported and loved during that time and coming to work was my escape from all the sadness going on. When I finally overcame each of those obstacles and returned to work full time, I was received with a huge "Wonder Woman W" made out of dozens of post its and each post it had a handwritten note from employees saying something supportive to lift my spirits. That is the type of culture we have and it's exactly why I love working here so much. It's my 2nd home and I can't imagine my life without this organization. The overall mindset of growth, innovation, and genuine care is so rare and spills over into how we take care of each and every client. The care we put into each and every massage is genuine with the best of intentions to help our clients....and it shows.

 

I am extremely fortunate that Dr. Shuel and his family invest in my growth as well. They provide funding for me to be involved in executive peer groups and Dr. Shuel has personally coached me to adopt a growth mindset and continually encourages and challenges me to think outside the box. The thing I admire the most is that the Shuel's goal is not to keep you an employee at OHM forever...they encourage growth above and beyond and are more than happy to help employees reach their highest potential, even if it means pursuing another career.

I’ve pretty much grown up at Oak Haven. Some of my earliest memories are helping out around the front desk—whether it was answering phones, stuffing envelopes, or making deposit runs with my mom. You could say this place runs in my blood.

But stepping into the front desk role officially gave me a whole new perspective. Even though I’ve always been around, becoming part of the actual team has helped me grow in ways I never expected. I’ve learned how to handle tough conversations, communicate to a high customer service standard, and find confidence in myself—both at work and in life.

The culture here is everything. It’s fun, supportive, and genuinely feels like a family. One of the biggest moments for me was our Elite Retreat cruise. That trip made me realize just how close we are as a team—and how much I belong here.

There was one day when a client got upset towards me and it really affected me. Another client saw me and came over just to make sure I was okay. That moment showed me just how much heart this place really has—not just from the team, but from the people we serve.

It’s also pretty amazing knowing that the work we do actually helps people feel better. I love being able to recommend the best therapists in Austin, and I know that if I ever need care myself, I’m in the right place.

To anyone who thinks a front desk job is “just a front desk job,” trust me—it’s so much more. We’re the ones making everything run smoothly behind the scenes. And knowing that I play a part in Oak Haven’s success? That means the world to me.

Oak Haven has taught me that work can be fun, fulfilling, and full of purpose. I’ve been part of this place my whole life—but now I truly feel like I belong to it.
